Saints and Relics
An important part of the church are saints. A saint is a holy person that was canonized by the Pope. Some examples of medieval saints are St. Francis, the patron saint of animals and birds and Saint Joan of Arc. Relics are the remains of a holy place or person, or the belongings of a person. They are considered to be very holy, and some even have stories behind, such as an ill person touching it and being cured. Every cathedral had a relic in it. However, relics were considered to be so holy that they were kept in containers called reliquaries. They were adorned with gold and jewels. One example of a relic is a piece of Mary’s, Jesus’s mother, veil.
Saints and relics were a very important part of the Church, and were purely light during medieval times.
